Contact Dima Todorova-Lilavois, manager of interactive communications, to meet and discuss how to most effectively convey your message to your audience.

The identification of communication needs, in terms of audience, messages and vehicles, is essential to the planning, development and implementation of effective marketing and communication strategies for all departments, centers and programs. To begin well-conceived communications or marketing plans, projects or publications that will serve you well, there are questions that must receive thoughtful consideration and answers. The input and insight of your colleagues is crucial.

Seven critical questions before you begin:

1. What audience do you want to reach? There may be as many separate plans as there are audiences.

2. What is the intended message?

3. How much information does this audience need?

4. Who is the most effective and appropriate messenger?

5. How frequently does this audience need contact? When planning a new brochure or recruitment poster, plan to order a quantity based on a two-year shelf life.

6. What is the expected outcome of the communication? What do you want the reader to do?

7. What vehicle(s) will be effective?
